Ben was born in Detroit, Michigan and was raised by his illiterate solo mother. He struggled academically throughout elementary school, but started to excel in middle school and throughout high school. After graduating with honors from his high school, he attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in Psychology.

 

He grew up in extreme poverty but as a result of his mother's focus on reading he went on to become the Director of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the USA.  He is the first person to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the back of the head.

 

In June 2002, he was forced to cut back on his public appearances when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, but the cancer was caught and treated in time.

 

In 2009 a movie, called Gifted Hands - The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., was made of his life.
